14 slices of good store bought white bread,
Challah, or brioche
Light vegetable oil for frying
1 ¼ cups whole milk
4 eggs, beaten
1 tablespoon sugar
½ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ cup Grand Marnier, cognac, or bourbon
Grated rind of one orange
½ cup sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Serve with maple butter or maple syrup
Trim off the bread crusts and each slice into four triangles
Heat the oil to 3600 F in a large heavy skillet
Combine the milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon, liquor, and orange rind in a shallow
dish. Dip the bread slices in the egg mixture. Fry on both sides until
golden brown, about 2 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels.
Sprinkle the cinnamon mixture over the French toast and serve immediately.
